By the time the call ended, Bryan had parked the car in the small hospital parking lot outside of the emergency department. I stared wordlessly at him, not knowing exactly what I was supposed to do next.He put his hand on mine and in a calming voice said, “Let’s go inside and see if we can find someone that is doing intake and learn what we can. It looks like they are still in the bay, so there’s a chance she hasn’t even made it into the system.” It was this simple gesture that provided me with the fortitude to face whatever came next.
